Friends in this lesson i am giving you information about the sarlahi district of nepal.Sarlahi district is located in province no.2 in the southern part of nepal.This district is located in the south of sindhuli district and in the north of the state of bihar in india. Similarly when talking about the area of sarlahi district the total area of this district is 1259 square kilometers.The average length of this district from north to south is 32 kilometers and the average width from east to west is 40 kilometers. The altitude of this district ranges from about 60 meters above sea level in the lower part to 659 meters in the upper part.There is a story about how this sarlahi district was named.There is a temple of goddess sarala devi in hempur village development committee sarlahi which is located in this district.It is believed that if people go to that temple at night with a lamp they will die.That is why even today no one goes to that temple with a lamp at night.The name of the area is from the name of this goddess sarala devi.After that the locals believed that the name sarlahi was derived from the name of this district.There is no settlement around the temple of sarala devi. Because it is believed that if someone accidentally enters the temple and takes a lamp someone may die.That is why there are no villages near the temple of goddess sarala devi.Earlier the sarlahi district was divided into 98 village development committees ,5 municipalities and six constituencies. Curreltly sarlahi has 20 local levels including 11 municipalities and 9 rural municipalities.Similarly it is divided into four development zones under the representative assembly. According to the census of bikram sambat 2078 the total population of sarlahi district is 862470.Of that population 435131 are males and 427339 are females.In terms of religion the largest population in this district is found to be hindus.Sarlahi district is home to a variety of ethnic groups including yadava,koiri, muslims, brahman, kshetri,tharu, newar,magar,kurmi,dhanuk, bhumihar, chamar,damai, dusad, kami etc.The most widely spoken language in sarlahi district is bajjika of which 59.1% speaks bajjika language.Similarly maithili language is spoken by 13.6%.Similarly nepali language is spoken by 11.6, tamang language by 4.28%, urdu language by 2.92%,magahi language by 2.53%, tharu language by 2.53%, magar lsnguage by 2.42%, and others language by 2.09%.Similarly in terms of religion this district is inhabited by 85.6% hindus.Similarly 7.9% muslims, 7.5% buddhist, 0.3% prakriti, 0.2% christians and 0.3% others.

Talking about the markets of sarlahi district the main ones are lalbandi, nawalpur,hariwon and karmaiya markets located on the highway to the north.Talking about the lalbandi market is mainly for the vegetable market.This market is located on the east-west highway. This market is also a famous market for scientifically cultivating tomatoes.A large wuantity of other vegetables such as brinjal, bitter gourds, gourds, bean and pea-bean are also produced in the area near this market.This lalbandi market is also known as the tomato capital of nepal.Farmers in this market area cultivate vegetables in their fields for twelve months.Apart from selling and distributing vegetable this market also sells clothes,food grain,goats and sheep etc.This matket one of the main big markets in this district.This market also houses ,large banks, government office and small industries.The largest rice mill in the district is located in the market.Earlier this market used to be very busy because people from sindhuli direct used to bring their produced grain and goats to this matket and sell them.In recent times with the expansion of the road the villages in that area have started to sell their produced goods and grains in their area elsewhere. Therefore it can be said that this market has been somewhat effected by the expansion of the road there. Another secondary market in the district is nawalpur market.This market is located on the west side of lalbandi market.Like lalband market this market is also another major market for tomato production.Since this market is also located on the east-west highway it has become easier to produce and sell vegetables.Not only vegetables are sold and distributed but also cows, buffaloes,sheep,oxen,goat etc.are sold.There is also a msin road from the west side of this market to hatipur,gair and malangwa the district headquarters.Similarly another market in this district is hariwon market.Since this market is also located on the east-west highway it is also very busy. Foid, goat,vegetable and other daily necessities are brought and sold in this market.In the past people from sindhuli district used to come to this market to shop.Now due to the expansion of the road people there have stopped coming to shop. This market is always busy as it has hospitals where primary care facilities can be obtained as well as a land revenue office and an regional administration office.Another market in this district is karmaiya market. This market located on the banks of the bagmati river is alao a very busy market.Earlier people from sindhuli district used to come to this market to shop.Nowadays with the expansion of the road prople from there have stopped coming to shop. A big fair is held in this market on the full moon day of manshir month. Earlier people from far and wide used to come this fair to buy daily necessities.Due to the road expansion in the area and the forced employment of youth abroad the fairs held in this market have also started to decrease.Local products from the hills are also sold in this market.The main route to enter sindhuli district from the terai or from the highway is from the northern part of this market.

There are also large markets in this central part of sarlahi district. Similarly the markets in the central part of sarlahi district include barahathwa and malangwa markets. Similarly big market in this district is barahathwa market.This market can be said to be located in the middle of the district.Barahathwa market can be said to be the largest and busiest market in the district.This market is a big market where cows,buffaloes, goats,oxen,chickens as well as vegetable and food grains are brought and sold.This market with various facilities is also consodered the largest market in sarlahi district. About 20 years ago thiscwas a very busy market.Traders from rai village in makawanpur district used to come to this market to buy male buffaloes. In later times with the improvement in agriculture farmers gradually eliminated the practice of keeping male buffaloes and oxen.In later times as traders from that place stopped coming to this market the activity of the commodity market here has decreased.With the expansion of the roads in rural areas traders go to village to buy goods which has also made this market busy.This market also has two cenema halls so it remains much busier than other markets.Bus and small public transport are operating from this market to other parts of the district and the country.Since the community hospital as well as private hospitals are also operating in this market it has become easier for the residents of this market area and other municipalities and rural municipalities near the market to get primary treatment.Since the land revenue office,regional administrative office and other government office has been established in this market for the convenience of the local residents this market always remains very busy.Another major market in sarlahi disirict is malangwa market located in the district headquarters.In bikram sambat 1980 the then rana prime minister chandra shamsher expanded malangwa market.The total area of malangwa market is about 1.5 square kilometers.Since this market is close to the india border it is also considered a major source of income.Since it is close to the indian border goods are available in this market somewhat cheaper than other markets.Therefore this market has made it easier for the residents living near this area to buy daily necessities.There are many ponds in this market which have increased the beauty of this market. Being the district headquarters this market remains busy but recently as government offices has been shifted to other places in the locality the busyness of this market has decreased to some extent.This market is also very convenient for transportation.From this market small and large vehicles reaching different parts of the district and different parts of the country are operated from this market.For drinking water a good arrangement has been made in this market by connecting water taps to every house.malangwa market is one of the well-equipped market and the district headquarters among the markets of the district.Malangwa market is the district headwuarters and is located 25 kilometers south of nawalpur chowk on the east-west highway.

Sarlahi district is an agriculture district.Sugarcane is mostly cultivate in this district.Apart from that rice, maize,wheat,turmeric,yam,potato are also cultivated.Since sugarcane is mostly cultivated in this district many sugar mills are in operation here. These mills are annapurna sugar mill,general industries private limited and indu shankar sugar mill located in hariwon.Annapurna sugar mill and general industries private limited located in dhankaul village development committee 9 sarlahi district are one of the largest sugar mills in the country.This sugar mill produce about 3 lakh quintals of white sugar.The source of livehood of most of the people of this district is the agricultural sector.If we look at the geographical structure of this district it is roughly divided into three parts.Of these the chure mountain range lies in the northern part,the bhawar region in the middle and the flat terai terrain lies in the south. When we talking about the chure mountain it extend from east to west in the northern part of sarlahi district. According to local legends this mountain is known as the shivalik hills.The height of the chure mountain is 900 meters above sea level and its width is 1350 meters. The border of this chure mountain ranges separates it from the inner terai.Talking about the bhawar region this region is located between the shivalic hills in the north and the terai region in the south.In the local language this region is called charkoshe jhadi.The altitude of the bhawar area ranges from about 150 meters to 300 meters above sea level.The resident of this region have a problem with drinking water.Thete is a no good irrigation system in the northern parts of this region.When talking about the terai region this region starts from the central terai and extends south to the indian state of bihar.Since ancient times this region has had a large population density and a suitable environment of cultivation and land with water resources.Therefore the terai region is also the capital of this district for food.This region relies on underground irrigation and rainwater for irrigation.Since the sources of ground water is close to the under ground can be easily used.

Friends there are also rivers and lakes in sarlahi district.Those rivers have been used for irrigation and the lakes have helped in attraction tourists.There are many rivers both large and small in sarlahi district. Among these large and small rivers the main rivers are the bagmati river, the haldi river which is also known as the banke river,the lakhandehi river and jhim river etc.Apart from these river there are other small rivers in the district that originate from the chure mountains and flow down into the plains.The banke river forms the eastern border of the district which separates the borders of mahottari district and sarlahi district whole the bagmati river separets the borders of sarlahi district and rautahat district. Regarding the bagmati river system the bagmati river is the largest river in the district.Nepal’s largest irrigation project has also been built on this river.This river irrigates most of the areas of satlahi district and most of the areas of rautahat district to the west are also irrigated with the water of this river.Since the water flows in this river is low during the winter months there is a plan to increase the water flow in this river by mixing the water of the sunkoshi river with the marin river.There is a plan to increase the water flow in the bagmati river and irrigate the areas that are not irrigated.Talking about the lakhandehi river it is the second largest river in the district.This river is about 25 kilometers long.This river originates in the chure hills and flows towards india through the simara village development committee of the district.Sarlahi district also has a jhim river.Talking about the jhim river this river flows from the north-eastern side of the chure mountain in the north of this district where it merges with another river phooljor river and flows through the kalinjoor river.Wher two jhim and kalinjoor rivers merges in bhairabpur village of zabdi village developnent committee and then flow towards south india through the jhim river.The length of this jhim river is about 20 kilometers long.This jhim river is known as the adhwara river in india and the adhwara river is also the eastern border of the makawanpur region. Another river in this district is the batauliya river.Talking about this river this river is among the longest rivers in the district.This river is about 29 kilometers long.This river originates from the soram range then flows through the flat areas of the chure range towards india from the batauliya village development committee in the district.Regarding the major lakes of this district there is a nari lake located in bayalbas in this district.Apart from this there is also bharat lake located in the bagmati municipality.This lake is also called bagmati fish pond.To reach this lake one has to go three kilometers south from the bagmati bridge on the east-west highway.This lake was built for the purpose of fish farming and recently boats are operated in this lake when the water of the bagmati river has not frozen.
