This district is located north-west of kathmandu.The glorious history of nuwakot district is described in various studies.Before and after the unification of nepal,this district was taken over by the gorkhali king prithavi narayan shah.After that prithavi narayan shah settled in this place and started expanding the nepalese nation.Prithavi narayan shah ruled from this place and died here.Therefore his funeral rites were also performed at devighat in nuwakot.It is a mid-hill district of nepal that does not touch any regional or international border.Nuwakot district is spread almost in a crescent shape from east to west.There is a large palace here which is called nuwakot palace.Nuwakot palace had nine floors.After the earthquake in 1990 bikram sambat destroyed this palace and the nuwakot palace became seven-storeyed.Nuwakot district is known as the birthplace of the brave warrior bahadur shah.This district is also known for the famous bhairav temple of nuwakot,jalapadevi temple and as the capital of nepal from 1801 to 1825.The headquarter of nuwakot district bidur municipality is 75 kilometers away from kathmandu.An interesting bullfighting fair is held in this district which is the only fair in nepal.There is a historical story about how the nuwakot district was named.The name of this district is a crruption of the words naukotiya,naukata,naukote and naukot.Because in ancient times the gopal dynasty ruled this nuwakot district.There are many places named kot in nuwakot district.Therefore it can be said that the name of the district comes from those kot names.Similarly it is believed that the name nuwakot comes from naukot.Because these are the confluence of nine forts such as belkot,malakot, bhsiramkot,nuwakot,kalikot,salyankot, simalkot,dhainukot,pyaskot etc.This belief is believed when looking at the administrative history of this district.According to another opinion the name of nuwakot district is nine kos away from kathmandu.In nepali language 1 kos is equal to 2 miles and 9 kos is equal to 18 miles.Similarly kot means a place with a fort.It is said that this place was named nuwakot because there were many forts.
If we are to describe the natural form of nuwakot district then this district is spread from 457 meters to 5144 meters above the sea level.Or based on the underground form of the district the then district can be devided into three main parts.Those high himalayan areas under the himalayan section fall under the first terrain.Similarly the hilly section or the secont region includes the medium hills.The third region includes the terai region or flat region.If we talk about the climate of this district we can find diversity in the climate here due to the unevenness in the structure of the land.The high mountainous region generally has a cold climate where there is snowfall during the rainy season.In the mountainous region you can find a temperate climate which is not too cold in winter and not too hot during the rainy season.Like other mid-hill regions of nepal most of the rainfall occurs in this district from the end of may to August due to the influence of monsoon winds.Nuwakot district is an area inhabitated by various castes.Each of these castes has its own type of religion culture.There are more then 45 castes and more then 10 religions, culture and more then 25 languages in nuwakot district.The castes living in nuwakot district are tamang, brahmin, kshetri,newar,rai and people of different languages and religions.The major festivals and fairs celebrated by the residents of this district are also diverse. The district which is rich in religious and culture diversity of the various castes living there,celebrates major festivals such as vijayadashami, dipawoli,lhosar, ramnavami,maghesankranti,shrawan sankranti,Teej,janai purnima, krishna asthami,buddha jayanti,eid etc.In addition various festivals are celebrated in the district.Among this festivals sindure jatra,devi jatra,ekadashi jatra,bibaha panchami,dupcheshwor jatra, etc have helped to keep the culture splendor of the devotees high.
Talking about the natural resources of this district although there are no great himalayas there are some high mountain. There are also some small and large rivers in nuwakot district.The major rivers of this nuwakot district are the trishuli river, suryamati river or tadi,salkhu,likhu, kolpu, kumari,palakhu,sindhure and chhahare etc.Talking about the main trishuli river the bhote river cross the himalayan from tibet and enters the rasuwa district of nepal. Then it joins trishuli river in the northern part of gorsaikunda which flows from east to west.Later this river known as the trishuli river enters nuwakot district.There are various lakes in this district to attract tourists.Among the various lakes in this district there are various type of lakes including suryamunda,sagarkunda,baldehi lake etc.Like the waterfalls in other districts there are waterfalls in nuwakot district.When talking about the waterfalls in nuwakot district the main notable waterfalls are khahare khola waterfall, Ripon waterfall,ghale gauko warerfall,pung bhung waterfall etc.Apart from these many other waterfalls in the hilly terrain have enhanced the beauty of this nuwakot district.There are some cave in nuwakot district that attract tourists.Some of the caves in nuwakot district include panchkanya cave,bhanjyang cave,gol bhanjyang cave,pathi bhanjyang cave,samari bhanjyang cave,kakani bhanjyang cave etc.This district also has a national park which has attracted domestic and foreign tourists.When it comes to biodiversity and national parks in this district lantang national park ranks first.This lantang national park covers an area of 198.5.4 square kilometers in nuwakot district.Apart from this langtang national park,shivapuri nagarjung park is another park in nuwakot district.This shivapuri nagarjung park covers an area 38.8.4 square kilometers of the district. The main religious,historical and tourists places in nuwakot district include main market and other areas.The main tourists places in this district include budar market,nuwakot palace square, sagarkunda,panchkanya cave,king prithvi narayan shah memorial king birendra memorial park etc.
There are many popular markets in nuwakot district the main one being bidur market.If we were to describe bidur market which is located in the main place of this district then this market is the district headquarter under bidur municipality.This market is the headquarter as well as a major commercial place.This bidur market is located 68 kilometers north-west of kathmandu.This place is durrounded by bandevi sheep field in the north,the batar tar in the south,the slopy field area of nuwakot in the east,the banks of the trishuli river in the west.In bikram sambat 2027-2028 the district headquarters was shifted from nuwakot palace square area to bidur market.There is a folk tale about how this bidur market got its named bidur matkret.Any time many men’s wives died from malaria disease in this market area and many men become widows.It is believed that the name of this place got it name from bidur after many men died in this market area.In nepali language men whose wives are dead are called bidur. Another beautiful market in nuwakot market is trishuli market.This market is located about two kilometers north-west of the district headquarters bidur.This market is devided into two parts by the trishuli river.This market is also one of the major commercial centers of the district.This is also an old market which is a well-organized market in nuwakot district.If we talk about the nuwakot palace area then before the panchyat system was started it was known as nuwakot west district no.1.Earlier the headquarter of this nuwakot district was in nuwakot palace.There is a famous seven-storey grand palace in this place of historical and srchaeological importance. The place where the palace is located is also called the nuwakot palace area.Apart from this malla palace,apartment,bhairavi temple etc.are also located in this nuwakot palace area.Ripumardini goddess,bhairavi goddess temple which are famous in this district also became a center of faith for the king of the shah dynasty.Hisyory mentiones that during the war between nepal and china bahadur shah made a vow to bhairavi goddess and china was defeated.From this place one can see a good view of the snow range of the himalayas.From this place there is the tadi valley to the north,The batartar to the south and trishuli river to the west.
Devighat can also be considered a tourist destination within this district.Near batartar in this district the confluence of the trishuli river which originated from gorsaikunda and the tadi river which originates from suryakunda is called triveni or Devighat.This place is located about 8 kilometers sourh of bidur the headquarters of nuwakot district.There is a famous temple of goddess jalapadevi here.According to legend it is it is said that jalapadevi who lives in devighat is the elder sister and bhairavidevi who lives in nuwakot is the younger sister.Every year a grand fair is held here on the full moon day of the month of chaitra and on the day of haribodhani ekadashi.The last cremation of prithavi narayan shah was performed at this devighat.Kakani within nuwakot district can also be considered another tourist destination.Kakani in nuwakot district is located 20 kilometers north-west of kathmandu.Kakani is also considerer an important tourist destination.Equipped with hotel facilities this place offers a beautiful view of the kathmandu valley to the south-west.From there you can see all the beautiful view of the world-famous great himalayan peaks.The great himalayan peaks that can be seen from kakani are annapurna, manaslu snow range,jugal mountain, gaurishanker mountain etc.Just as machhapuchhre mountain can be seen from pokhara city,ganesh mountain nearby can also be easily seen from kakani.Batartar is also considered an important tourist destination in nuwakot district.This tar is located about 3 kilometers south of trishuli market.There is a large tar or a flat land with red soil which is called batartar.This batartar is surrounded by the trishuli river on the west and the tadi river on the east.The trishuli highway which starts from kathmandu passes through this batartar or large flat land.Another famous tourist destination in nuwakot district is betrawati. Betrawati can also be considered an important tourist place in nuwakot district.This place is an important place in nuwakot district and along with nuwakot and rasuwa districts.Betrawati is located on the border of gerkhu village development committee ward no.9.This place is a very picturesque and religiously importan place.
Betrawati is located about 10 kilometers north of the nuwakot district headquarters.This place is located on the road section leading from nuwakot to thunche.Gorsaikunda is also a famous place in nuwakot district.Gorsaikunda is the source of the trishuli river and palakhu river the main source of which is the vedadhara.In nepal the betrawati river is known as the gaya of the north and there is also an ancient ram temple here.In gaya in the north Devotees come here to perform shraddha in memory of the deceased during the month of magh and on the full moon day of magh month.It is believed that the dead soul will easily receive the pinda and tarpan offered sraddha here.Not only that it is also believed that they will be able to cross their path easily.A big fair is also held here throughout the month of magh.Apart from this a big fair is held here on the day of haribodhini ekadashi in this area.This area is known as the place where the betrawati treaty was signed.This area of nuwakot district holds a historical importance. Because a treaty was signed here in 1912 to stop the war between nepal-tibet and china-tibet.The dam of the old trishuli hydropower project is located near betrawati.Bhalche is also an important tourist destination in nuwakot district.Located in the north-west of district bhalche falls under village development cimmittee.This place although remote is very picturesque.From bhalche one can observe the snow range as welk as the famous tourist centers in kakani and kathmandu valley.Betrawati can be easily reached from this place through the banks of the salakhu river. Bhalche is about 16 kilometers away from trishuli market.More then 500 large sheep farms are operating in this place where the tamang caste is the majority.High-quality sherp,goats,bulls,male buffaloes etc.are raised there.Dupcheshwor mahadev temple is also one of the religious places. Dupcheswor falls under the shikharbesi village development committee in the north-east of this district.This religious place is about 40 kilometrrs away from bidur the headquarters of nuwakot.The place is an important religious place in this district.The dupcheswor mahadev located here is called degdeshwor by the locals.
