Samvat is a nepali word which means the time of year running in the country.That is the sambat running in nepal is called nepal sambat.In fact any country has some kind of sambat.This samvat is used in the name of a country,in the name of a king, in the name of a person.Any sambat starts with the name of an event that happened in a country.For example the bikram sambat that began in nepal is a sambat that began with the name of the indian ruler Vikramadiya.Similarly when the gupta sambat started the guptas ruled that kingdom.After that the name gupta was changed to gupta samvat in that kingdom.Lakshman sambat can also be seen in other sambats.This samvat started from the time of lakshman.It can be said that among the sambats the sambat that is used in the name of the country is nepal sambat.There are various theories about the beginning of this nepal sambat.Some say that nepal sambat began after tibet was defeated in the nepal-tibet war.There is a theory that nepal samvat began after tibet was defeated in the war or nepal sambat began after nepal was liberated from tibet.When talking about nepal sambat it can actually be seen that this sambat is similar to the customs of newari castes.In the newari community the day of aunsi or the dark moon day in the month of kartik is the time of many types of cultures related to agriculture in the newari society.Similatly if we look at the cultures celebrated in nepal 99 percent of the cultures are related to agriculture.That is why nepal sambat is also related to agriculture.In fact when the day of lakshmi puja of tihar comes that day marks the end of the financial year of the newari society. Similarly this lakshmi puja day is also the day to calculate the financial year of the year.Or only after storing the grain produced from agriculture in the house the financial income is calculated.A new life is started on the first day of the shuklapaksha or the bright lunar fortnight the day after the income of the financial year is calculated.After calculating the income in the previous financial year the new year begins on the occasion of the beginning of the new financial year.The new year begins from that day itself.It can be assumed that nepal sambat began from this day. Therefore if we look at the sambats before nepal sambat we can see that all the sambats began on the first day of the bright fortnight of the month of kartik.
It can be seen that the nepal sambat started in a new way by stopping the privious old sambat.Looking at in this in this way it is clear that the nepal sambat began in bikram sambat 937 or AD 880.Thus in relation to the culture of newari society this sambat can be considered as the beginning of a new year and a new life.Before the nepal sambat began nepal sambat was not found written in the other sambats. Only sambat was written in those sambats.When searching for when nepal sambat began it can be said that it has been almost 1146 years. Looking at the history of the lichchhave period various types of sambats such as gupta sambat, Lakshman sambat,shaka sambat, lichchhavi sambat,mandeca sambat, bikram sambat,kaliyuga sambat, hebrew,hijri ,kaligata, etc.are found in the records.Most of those sambats are sambats which were also called anshuvarma sambat and mandeva sambat during the lichchhave period. At that time nepal sambat was not used.The word nepal sambat is derived from sambat 185 nepal sambats.But before nepal sambat was called and written only the sambat was written.Then while searching the nepal sambat in 827 an inscription was found in a village of bhaktapur district.The inscription contained the sakhwa sambat which provided evidence that there was a samvat in that kingdom.But the sambat written in the inscription did not contain any evidence of any sambat.In fact the nepal sambat which is currently in use seem to have started in 185.Althuogh there is no official evidence of the beginning of the nepal sambat in astrology books it is mentioned that it started in 304.Nepal sambat is a popular sambat based on the name of the country.The lichchhavi sambat which began before the nepal sambat was based on the dynasty.Similarlt the mandeva sambat began with the name of king mandeva.Similay sambats like gupta sambat were in vogue with the name of anshuvarma. At that time the gipta sambat was organized in the neighboring country of india.Nepal sambat was more popular than those sambats in that era.That nepal sambat was practically prevalent in layer times until the reign of chandra shamsher. Later nepal sambat seems to have been compleyely removed from the time of chandra shamsher.Nepal sambat was removed from the national sambat and bikram sambat was started in nepal from 1960 AD. After that bikram sambat was implemented as the officially recognized national sambat.
When an old inscription was found in a village in bhaktapur district.After that record was found it was found that the sakhwa sambat was written in that inscription.Based on this the sakhwa sambat became popular. Later this sakhwa sambat that was popular and the legend in sakhwa sambat were combined.Thus it can be believed that the legend in shakhwa samvat is completely consistent with nepal sambat.That is why nepal sambat is also called sakhwa sambat.Sakhwa samvat refer to a merchant from kantipur and his name was shankhadhar sakhwa.It is also called sakhwa sambat because he was the one who started this nepal sambat.There is a story about how nepal sambat started in the name of the merchant shankhadhar sakhwa.In fact this story is the most reliable story about the beginning of nepal sambat.This story seems to be similar to other stories.A popular fact about the establishment of nepal sambat in nepal accurred.This nepal sambat is found to be closely related to that event.It is connected to the time of king raghadeva the son of king mandeva of the lichchhavi period.At that time the capital of the valley was in lalitpur.King raghadeva there had a policy of involving the people in the development of the country. Accordingly ananda deva was first worker as a ruler in bhaktapur at that time.At that time famous astrologer gathered and started making predictions.Therefore only after going vishnumati river on an auspicious day did they discoverd that they discover that there was gold in the sand at the lukhu shrine on the vishnumati river.According to astrology after it was discovered that gold was found in the sand of lukhu shrine on the vishnumati river the astrologers went to the king ananda deva.The astrologers went to the king ananda deva and informed him that according to their scriptures there was a gold in the sand of lukhu shrine.After hearing from the astrologers that gold was found in the sand of lukhu shrine on the vishnumati river the king was surprised.Then he called the porters and advised them to bring sand from lukhu shrine.He not only advised them to bring sand he also promised them a good wage.After listening to the king the porters took their shovels and bamboo-band basket and headed towards the banks of the vishnumati river.As the astrologers had told the king the porters had to bring sand from the banks of the vishnumati river at the right time.
While walking they reached a place where there was a gold in the sand on the banks of the vishnumati river. They went to the banks of the vishnumati river and from there as per the kings’s instructions they started filling their bamboo-band basket with sand.After all the porters had filled their bamboo-nand basket with sand they headed towards bhaktapur.They were tired from walking for some time and carrying sand.Therefore the porters dumped their loads on the banks of the vishnumati river to relieve their fatigue.After dumping their loada the porters of bhaktapur were sitting on the banks of the vishnumati river to relieve their fatigue.Just then a merchant from kantipur saw some porters sitting on the banks of the vishnumati river and inquired.On inquiry he came to know that they had brought in their bamboo-band basket.It was discovered that the sand was brought by none other than king ananda deva of bhaktapur. Shankhadhar sakhwa suspected that the king had ordered the sand to be filled with some expensive object.So he decided to take that sand to his own house.After that shankhadhar sakhwa said in front of the porters “i also needed sand like the one you brought”.The porters refused saying that it was sand brought as per the king’s order and that we would not give it to you.Then shankhadhar sakhwa started persuading the porters and said “leave this sand in my house and take the other sand and go to the king”.Even then the porters did not accept but he promised to pay more than what the king had given and to feed him delicious food.Then the porters promised to feed him more and more delicious food than what the king had given him.Then the porters took the sand from lukhu shrine site to shankhadhar sakhwa’s house.After pouring sand into the house shankhsdhar sakhwa fed the porters delicious food and sent them away with more wages than they expected. They poured sand into the shankhadhar sakhwa’s house and then went to likhu shrine to get more sand.After that the porters went to the lukhu shrine on the vishnumati river filled another bamboo-band basket with sand and returned to the king’s palace.
The famous astrologers of bhaktapur had told king ananda deva that on this day and at the right time gold would be found in the sand of lukhu shrine located on the banks pf vishnumati river.According to the astrologers on the king’s orders the porters brought sand from lukhu shrine but the porters did not know anything about this sand.On that day and at that time gold was found in the sand of lukhu shrine but on other days and at other times gold was not found.The sand brought by the porters at the right time was poured into the house of shankhadhar sakhwa and sand from another place and at a different time was teken to the king’s palace.After pouring sand from lukhu shrine in the palace the porters returned to their home.The king went to see the gold in the sand saying that gold was found in the sand of lukhu shrine.According to the astrologer’s advice the sand of lukhu shrine contained a large amount of gold but no gold was found in the sand of lukhu shrine. After not finding gold in the sand of lukhu shrine the king got angry with the astrologers and called them back to the palace.When the astrologers arrived at the palace the king showed them the sand from the lukhu shrine that the porters had brought.After not finding gold in that sand the king scolded the astrologers severely.The king also told the astrologer that their classical knowledge was false. The king also said that from today onwards you should stop practicing astrology and throw all your classical books into the river.Even when the king scolded them like this the astrologers did not say anything. Then they returned home disappointed.After asyrology was proved wrong king ananda deva used many words to abuse the astrologers.King ananda deva began to think with faith in astrology and looked at the bamboo-band basket into which the porter had poured sand.As the king looked into the bamboo-band basket he saw yellow gold shining in places in the corners of the bamboo-band basket.After seeing the gold glittering and shining in the corner of the bamboo-band basket the king ananda deva hurried to the astrologers.As the king hurried to the house of the astrologers they were taking out their books of scriptures and burning them.After seeing some astrologers burning their scripture books after their astrology was proved wrong king ananda deva started puting out the fire in those books.He extinguished the burning books with cow’s milk. After putting out the fire in those books the king consoled the astrologers and apologized for using so many words in this passion. Admitting his mistake the king apologized saying that astrology is not false but that i had falsified it in a fit of anger and returned to his palace.Aftet that king ananda deva suspected the porters and called the porters to the palace and question them.The king asked the porters where they had brought the sand from lukhu shrine and poured it.The porters did not say anything about it and the king scoled them harshly. After that the king asked them whether they were telling the turth or whether they should take stricts action.If you are not telling the truth i can not even pay you for the sand you brought.After that the porters told all the details of his fealing with shankhadhar sakhwa.After they told the truth the king sent the porters home.
Shankhadhar sakhwa kept the gold-bearing sand brought by the porters from the lukhu shrine in his house. After 4 days when shabkhadhar sakhwa looked at it he saw that the sand had turned into very beautiful gold burning like fire.Then he was very happy.If he earned a lot of money by selling that gold he promised to use it for religious works.After this the people of all nepal paid off the debts of all nepal and changed the day.It is said that he also took permission from the king to establish a new samvat or calendar.He has paid off the small and big debts of all the people of nepal and now he can be said to be great.After this 17 sambat 802, mandeva sambat 395 and nepal sambat 1 were established and a new sambat began.Thus shankhadhar sakhwa started a new nepal sambat.Scholars studying nepal sambat have said that this sambat began on october 20,879. Talking about bikram sambat it was running in 936.The day the nepal sambat began was thursday which the day of the kartik the bright half first day of lunar months.There is a difference of 936 years and 7 months between bikram sambat and nepal sambat.The nepal sambat introduced by shankhadhar sakhwa was used as the official language of nepal until bikram sambat 1960.This sambat was in use until the time of chandra shamsher.After that he abolished nepal sambat and started bikram sambat.According to nepali historian dilli raman regmi the nepal sambat era began during the reign of king raghdeva.When raghadeva was the king of nepal a major epidemic broken out.Due to that epidemic many people became poor and shankhadhar sakhwa sold his gold to pay off all the people’s debts.Due to the great epidemic a oblation was performed at the pashupatinath temple to get rid of it.After this oblation the epidemic was eradicated.After shankhadhar sakhwa freed all nepalis from the epidemic and paid off everyone’s debts the new sambat began.It is said that nepal sambat began during that time of joy when the epidemic was eradicated.Thus in bikram sambat 2056 or nepal sambat 1120 shankhadhar was declared a national hero by the then krishna prasad bhattrai’s government.Similarly in bikram sambat 2065 or nepal sambat 1128 the then prime minister puhspa kamal dahal declared it national recognition on the newari festival days of 1129.Also in bikram sambat 2080 or nepal sambat 1144 it was decided to used it for government work.Friends how did you like the information about nepal sambat ?
